How to Prepare Your Kids for a Family Photography Session on Vancouver Island

If the thought of getting everyone ready for family photos makes you nervous, you're definitely not alone.

The good news? Your kids don't need to sit perfectly still or smile on command.

Here are a few ways to make your family photography session easier.

Don't tell them they have to smile

Instead of saying “You need to smile for the photographer,” tell them you're going to go explore, play and have some fun together.

This takes away a lot of pressure.

Avoid a rushed schedule

Give yourself plenty of time to get dressed and arrive.

A rushed child is usually not a happy child and that's okay.

Bring snacks

Especially with younger children, snacks can be a lifesaver.

Just avoid anything particularly messy right before the session.

Let them be themselves

If your child wants to run, we can photograph them running.

If they want to hold your hand, that's a beautiful photograph too.

I prefer capturing genuine interactions rather than forcing everyone into identical poses.

Trust the process

Family photography isn't about getting every person to smile at the camera at exactly the same time.

It's about documenting your family as you are right now.

A little chaos, movement and laughter are all part of the story.
