Why Add Film Photography to Your Wedding or Portrait Session? | Gaia Photography

There is something about film photography that feels a little different.

Maybe it's the softness, the colours, the grain, or the way a photograph can feel like a memory rather than simply a picture.

While digital photography gives us the ability to photograph quickly and capture every little moment, adding 35mm film to your wedding or portrait session gives you something a little more nostalgic and unexpected.

If you're considering adding film photography to your session, here are a few reasons I love including it.

Film has a feeling all its own

One of the biggest reasons I love shooting film is the way it feels.

Film has a softness and depth that is difficult to completely recreate with digital photography. The colours, grain and natural imperfections give each image its own character.

There is also something nostalgic about seeing a photograph captured on film. It can make an image feel like a memory from another time, even when it was taken yesterday.

For couples and families who want photographs that feel natural, colourful and genuine, film can be a beautiful addition to a digital gallery.

It slows things down

With digital photography, it's easy to take hundreds of photographs without thinking twice.

Film is different.

Because each roll has a limited number of frames, there is a little more intention behind each photograph.

I love that this can create a different rhythm during a session. Instead of constantly photographing, there are moments where we simply pause, interact and enjoy what's happening.

Some of my favourite film photographs are the quiet moments in between the bigger ones.

A laugh.

A little glance.

Someone reaching for their partner's hand.

A child running toward their parents.

Those moments don't need to be perfectly posed to be meaningful.

Film adds variety to your gallery

Adding 35mm film doesn't mean replacing your digital photographs.

I still photograph your session primarily with digital so you have a full, beautiful gallery documenting your experience.

Film is an additional layer.

You get the clean, detailed images from your digital gallery alongside a smaller collection of film photographs with a completely different look and feeling.

When you look through your gallery, the film photographs become little surprises scattered throughout the story.

Film is beautiful for weddings

There are so many moments throughout a wedding day that look incredible on film.

The details while you're getting ready.

Your flowers.

Your partner seeing you for the first time.

A quiet moment together during portraits.

Your grandparents laughing during dinner.

Your friends dancing.

The little moments that happen when nobody is looking at the camera.

Film can give those moments a timeless, nostalgic quality that works beautifully alongside your digital wedding photographs.

For couples looking for something a little more personal and artistic, adding 35mm film photography to your wedding package can be a really special way to document the day.

Film is also beautiful for portraits

You don't need to be getting married to enjoy film photography.

35mm film works beautifully for couples, families, maternity sessions, graduations, branding sessions and other portraits.

For a couple's session, film can add a romantic and nostalgic feeling.

For family photography, it can give everyday interactions a timeless quality.

And for branding photography, film can create a softer, more editorial look that can be especially beautiful for lifestyle images.

The little imperfections are part of the beauty

Film isn't supposed to look perfectly clean.

You might see a little grain. You might notice subtle colour variations. Sometimes the exposure isn't completely uniform.

That's part of what makes it feel real.

I don't want every photograph to look like it came out of a perfectly polished studio. I love photographs that retain a little bit of character and feel connected to the moment they came from.

The imperfections are part of the story.

Why I love combining digital and film

For me, digital and film photography aren't competing formats.

They complement each other.

Digital allows me to photograph your wedding or session comprehensively and make sure all of those important moments are documented.

Film allows me to slow down and create something a little more intentional and nostalgic.

Together, they give you a gallery that feels both complete and personal.

Is adding film right for you?

If you love photographs with a nostalgic, timeless and slightly imperfect feeling, you might love having film included in your session.

It's especially worth considering if you:

• Love the look of film photography

• Want something a little different from a standard digital gallery

• Love nostalgic and timeless photographs

• Want more variety in your wedding or portrait gallery

• Enjoy candid, natural moments

• Like photographs that feel authentic rather than overly polished

You don't need to know anything about film photography yourself. You can simply enjoy your session and let me take care of the rest.

Add a little film to your story

Your photographs are meant to bring you back to a moment.

Not just what it looked like, but how it felt.

Adding 35mm film to your wedding or portrait session gives us another way to capture that feeling.

A little grain. A little softness. A little imperfection.

And a handful of photographs that might end up being some of your favourites.

If you love natural, colourful and genuine photography, film might be the perfect addition to your Gaia Photography session.
