Natural Lighting for Photography on Vancouver Island | Gaia Photography

When it comes to photography, one of the biggest things that can change the look and feel of your photos is something we don't have complete control over: the light.

As a Vancouver Island photographer, I spend a lot of time working with natural light. Whether we're photographing a family session in the Comox Valley, engagement photos in Campbell River, or a wedding somewhere along the coast, the weather and time of day can completely change the atmosphere of your photos.

And honestly? That's part of the fun.

We can't always guarantee perfect sunshine, clear skies or a glowing sunset. But we can choose a time of day and location that gives us the best chance of creating beautiful, natural photographs with whatever the day brings.

Here are some of my favourite types of natural light and what makes each one special.

Overcast Days: Soft, Even and Perfect for Portraits

If you live on Vancouver Island, you already know that overcast skies are pretty common.

But cloudy weather isn't something you need to worry about when it comes to your photography session. In fact, overcast light can be some of my favourite light for portraits.

Clouds act like a giant natural softbox, diffusing the sunlight and creating soft, even lighting across your face. This means fewer harsh shadows and less squinting, which can make it especially beautiful for family photography, couples sessions and professional branding photos.

Overcast weather also gives colours a softer, more muted look that works beautifully with the greens of Vancouver Island's forests.

This type of light is especially lovely when we're surrounded by mossy trails, ferns and towering evergreens. Instead of competing with bright sunlight, the natural surroundings become part of the image.

If you're planning family photos in Campbell River or the Comox Valley, an overcast day can actually give us a lot of flexibility.

Sunny Days: Bright, Colourful and Full of Energy

There's something so happy about a sunny photography session.

Bright sunshine brings out vibrant colours, creates beautiful blue skies and can make beach sessions feel especially summery. It's a great match for playful family photos, colourful branding sessions and relaxed couples photography.

The key with sunny weather is knowing how to work with it.

Rather than placing you directly in harsh midday sunlight, I can look for open shade, trees, buildings or other natural ways to soften the light. We can also choose locations where the surrounding environment helps us create more flattering light.

Sunny days can also give us beautiful opportunities to play with shadows, backlighting and sun flare.

So if you wake up on the morning of your Vancouver Island photo session to a completely sunny sky, don't panic. There's plenty we can do with it.

Golden Hour: Warm, Glowing and Romantic

Golden hour is probably one of the most requested types of natural light for photography and for good reason.

Golden hour happens around sunrise and sunset, when the sun is low in the sky. Instead of the strong overhead light we get during the middle of the day, the sunlight becomes softer, warmer and more directional.

This can create that beautiful golden glow around you, especially when we're photographing somewhere with an open view.

Beach sessions are particularly gorgeous during golden hour. Locations like Miracle Beach or Saratoga Beach can give us open skies, ocean views and beautiful warm light as the sun gets lower.

Golden hour is also fantastic for engagement photography and couples sessions because the warm light can create a soft, romantic feeling without needing anything artificial.

For weddings, golden hour portraits can be a beautiful opportunity to step away from the reception for a few minutes and create some more intimate portraits of the newly married couple.

The only downside?

Golden hour doesn't last forever. That's why timing is important.

Rainy Days: Moody, Cozy and Very Vancouver Island

Rain isn't necessarily something we need to avoid.

If you've ever spent time on Vancouver Island, you know that rain is part of the landscape. And sometimes embracing it can create some of the most unique photographs.

Rainy weather can give forests a deep, rich colour and make all those greens, mosses and ferns really stand out. Wet surfaces can also add beautiful reflections and texture to your images.

There can be something incredibly cozy about photos taken under umbrellas, walking through the forest in light rain or simply embracing the weather instead of trying to pretend it isn't happening.

Of course, if we're expecting heavy rain or unsafe weather, we'll always talk about our options and decide what makes the most sense.

But a little Vancouver Island drizzle?

I'm usually pretty happy to work with it.

So, What's the Best Time of Day for Photos?

There isn't one perfect answer.

It really depends on the type of session, the location, the season and the feeling you want your photographs to have.

For example:

Morning light can be soft, fresh and peaceful.

Midday light can be bright and colourful, especially when we can use shade.

Overcast light can be soft and flattering for portraits.

Golden hour can be warm, glowing and romantic.

Rainy weather can be moody, cozy and distinctly West Coast.

When we have the flexibility, I'll help you choose a time of day that works well with the location and the type of photographs we're creating.

We Can't Control the Weather, But We Can Work With It

One of my favourite things about natural photography is that every session is a little different.

We can plan around the best time of day. We can look at the location. We can keep an eye on the forecast. We can choose a forest location when the sun is particularly strong or head toward the beach when we're hoping for that beautiful evening glow.

But we can't control the weather.

And I don't think we should have to.

Some of my favourite photographs happen because the weather did something unexpected. The clouds rolled in. The sun came out. It started raining. The light changed.

Instead of trying to make every session look exactly the same, I want your photographs to feel connected to the day you actually experienced.

That's especially important to me as a Vancouver Island photographer. Our forests, beaches, mountains, cloudy skies and unpredictable weather are part of what makes this place so beautiful.

Choosing the Right Light for Your Photography Session

When you book a photography session with Gaia Photography, you don't need to know anything about lighting.

That's my job.

I'll help you choose a location and time of day that makes sense for your session, while also considering the season, weather, the type of photographs you're hoping for and how you want your photos to feel.

Whether we're photographing your family at Miracle Beach, exploring a forest in the Comox Valley, taking engagement photos around Campbell River or creating branding photos for your Vancouver Island business, I'll work with the natural light that's available to create photographs that feel genuine, colourful and relaxed.

Because sometimes the best light isn't the light we planned for.

It's the light we found along the way.
