What to Wear for Family Photos on Vancouver Island
Family photos don't need perfectly matching outfits.
In fact, I usually recommend the opposite: coordinate your outfits rather than choosing the exact same colours for everyone.
Start with a colour palette
Choose three or four colours that work together.
For Vancouver Island sessions, earthy neutrals, creams, soft blues, greens, warm browns and subtle pops of colour can work beautifully with beaches and forests.
mixup the textures
Use a variety of texture to add even more interest!
If we're sticking to three to four colours adding in some texture and movement can make things even more pleasing to the eye. Think flowy skirts, chunky knits, denim and different fabrics to add more variety and interest to your photos.
Avoid everyone wearing the same thing
Six people in identical white shirts can make the photo feel more like a uniform than a family. Instead, choose complementary colours and different textures.
Think about the location
For beach photos, lighter and softer colours can look beautiful against the ocean and sand. For forest sessions, warm neutrals and earthy colours naturally complement the greenery.
Dress for movement
Your children will probably be running, sitting, exploring and playing.
Choose clothing they can comfortably move in. This is especially important for outdoor family photography in Campbell River and the Comox Valley, where sessions often involve walking along trails or beaches.
Bring layers
A cardigan, sweater or jacket can add variety to the gallery and help everyone stay comfortable if the temperature changes.
And don't worry if your toddler refuses to wear the outfit you planned.
Some of the best family photos happen when everyone relaxes and lets the session be a little imperfect.
At the end of the day wear what makes you feel most confident and comfortable! These are your photos and we all want you feeling your best!
